Art, Music, and Food, Oh My!

On Friday, April 16th, Milne transformed one small corner into a gallery and performance space for an audience of about 40-50. Several students provided their original artwork for display, including oil paintings, color pencil, photography, and pen & ink.

There were several musical performances of jazz/blues, classical, and rock with acts performing sets of 15-25 minutes. There were even a few improv moments, including working on a new song with A+B2 riffing on a crowd-inspired "Library" theme. Catch a bit of the fun in this video!

This event was used to raise funds for the Senior Class Gift.

Unfortunately, we weren't able to capture every performance, but here are the links to several other performances:
My Funny Valentine; guitar and voice.
Ralph Vaughn Williams; violin and voice.
Saxophone Quartet

What do you think? Should the Library host more events like this? Let us know!

Welcome back Kate Pitcher!

It seems like only yesterday that the staff at Milne Library was celebrating the birth of little Silas Goodrich, Collection Development Librarian Kate Pitcher's second son. The entire family, including big brother Griffin, are thoroughly enjoying their growing clan and life is busy and wonderful.

We welcome Kate back from maternity leave and surround her with lots of support as she jumps right back into the swing of things by leading the library's first Faculty Luncheon. As the librarian in charge of book budgets and the lofty task of diversifying and balancing Milne Library's collections, Kate and her fellow library colleagues will host an informal lunch for faculty, comprised mostly of Department Chairs and Library Representatives, on Wednesday April 7 between 12-1:30. Topics to be discussed include scholarly publishing initiatives, material budgets and departmental allocations and a working document of collection development guidelines.

We are so happy to have Kate back in the library!

GOLD (Ruby Certificate) Workshops in Milne -- Week of 4/5

Join Milne Librarians this week as they offer two more GOLD workshops as part of the Ruby Leadership for the Information Age Certificate series.

On Tuesday, April 6, 2-3 p.m. in Milne 208, Tracy Paradis will present Using Diigo Bookmarking Tool, a powerful research tool that combines enhanced online browsing and interactions with annotation, social bookmarking and information sharing capabilities. No longer do students need to print web pages to highlight and take personalized notes! Workshop participants will learn how to save, annotate, tag and share their favorite sites while creating their own personal archive.

Students feeling unsure or anxious about citing the sources used in their research papers may want to attend Citing Sources in English and History, offered by Sue Ann Brainard on Wednesday, April 7, 2-3 p.m. in Milne 109. Participants will practice writing bibliography entries and footnotes in both MLA and Turabian/Chicago styles. The workshop will cover tricky entries for reprinted articles, essays in collections, and primary sources like oral histories and interviews.

See the GOLD registration page to register for these workshops and others.

Count yourself in. It's important!

Do you know that it's very important that you be counted here at SUNY Geneseo? It's true! Even if you've been included in the census at home with your parents, it's extremely important that you ALSO fill out the census forms here at school.

Why is it so important to participate in the census? Because Geneseo students reside in Geneseo, Livingston County, NY the majority of the year, like all other residents of Geneseo they utilize Livingston County resources. Accurate census data allow local, state, and federal government agencies to plan budgets and make allocations to serve everyone who lives in a particular area. Residence Life has a whole page explaining the details here and there's a Facebook page for you to get all the latest updates!

If you're looking for more information, the "Census Bureau Supplies Numbers America Needs" video explains how communities benefit from Census Bureau data collection efforts. Testimonials describe the importance of a complete count and why the 2010 Census will be the most important count in our nation's history. So make sure you stand up and get counted!

Bunk bed installation @ Milne!

The time has finally come! After decades of waiting, Milne Library's expansion plans will soon begin.

At the top of the list are 300 bunk beds to be installed on the upper level of the Library. Ladders and slides, glow stars on the ceiling, personal video screens and bedding available at Circulation (or BYOB) all complete the package to entice our late night studiers to a restful break. As a special service in the evenings, librarians will be on call to read bedtime stories from 10 PM - 1AM during the Milk & Cookie hours. Tuck in service will be available upon request.

To make room for our new and improved quiet study area, books will be moved to an off-campus storage site.

Other summer updates include:

Purchase of a new database that miraculously does comprehensive research on a given topic and then types the paper for you! This will help save our students time so that they can instead enjoy sunning themselves in our new rooftop pool; a first for academic libraries everywhere! Order a refreshing drink from our swim-up tiki bar, but be careful! Don't get the books & laptops wet! Special towel warmers, bathing suits, goggles and flippers will all be available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.

Additionally, IDS is adjusting their name to Incredibly Delicious Snacks and will expand their service to include delivery of food items from Books n Bytes throughout the Library. Be sure to place your order via chat using our new "IM a Sandwich" feature! Check out a preview here.

Interested in working at Milne Library? Apply for one of our new job opportunities! Lifeguards, suntan lotion applicators, and waiters are all needed.

In an effort to respond to student input, our changes reflect our dedication to you, our students at SUNY Geneseo, we pose one final question:
